The new Winter Issue of PRIMS, I have 2 articles!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!!!

I must admit, I am totally trilled with this issue of PRIMS! I dearly love this magazine. The photography and selection of art is top notch. The staff is also very friendly and easy to work with.

I have 2 very different articles in this issue. The first features some new pieces of art. I stepped away from teddy bears for a while, to work on paper clay pieces. I am so hooked on paper clay now! I was so excited with how these pieces turned out, they are so fun and whimsical. To have them featured in PRIMS is just that much more exciting. Not only do I love creating pieces of art, I have also developed a love of writing about art. Oh, and the "Whimsical Circus Characters" mentioned on the cover...that's my article! ((((big smile))))

My 2nd article in this issue is a continuation of the TDIPT(TO Dwell in Primitive Thymes) article that I wrote for the Fall 2011 issue. I had so much fun putting these 2 articles together, and the creative process involved in the writing of each. Each artist from TDIPT that participated sent in stellar work to the magazine, as you can see from the photos. I love to decorate after Christmas with Winter themed items, and Snow folk are perfect. I set up a cute display of different snowmen on my mantle, after the Christmas decorations are packed away. It keeps things bright and cheerful during the cold winter months.

The To Dwell in Primitive Thymes group launch has officially started on eBay. Just search TDIPT on eBay all this week to find lots of wonderful Christmas inspired handmades from a fabulous group of artists.

Just for this launch I made this darling Victorian Christmas bear named "Yule". She is a 15" bear made in a chocolate colored mohair. She wears a vintage dolls dress and hat. I love the way the red is so crisp and bold against the chocolate color of the mohair. I added the vintage off white corsage and she holds a banner that says "Snow Ball". She's a really cute antique style bear, perfect for any collection.

I'm really late posting this cute Christmas bear on my blog. The Thanksgiving holiday has gotten me all out of sorts. :) Berry, is a 15" bear made from a chocolate colored mohair. I love this color, it really reminds me of antique bears.

I must admit, I am a total magazine junkie. I'm also super picky about which ones I read. A magazine, just like a good book, has certain qualities that draw you in. For me, it's not just about whether the cover shot catches my eye first thing, or that it's the Christmas issue. There needs to be a quality to the paper it's printed on, the size and shape of the magazine needs to be appealing, the photography needs to be crisp, clean, modern and some what edgy and it's really refreshing when it works with, and features artists. It's also nice when the editor and staff are real, accessible people.

OK, that's a LOT of stuff going on, but it's cool, fun stuff! I have a new large size bear listed on eBay right now. It's been a super duper long time since I made a bear for eBay that was over 9" tall. This guy is my 15" size pattern that I dearly love. He came out so old and antique looking. Which led to my experimenting with some different types of vintage style photography. So now I am totally hooked on this! I love taking photos anyway, and this technique just adds to the excitement. I know lots of people have been working this way for a while, but I am slowing catching up.

antique Prim Fall Thanksgiving bear vignette on eBay

I have one last Fall piece listed on eBay. This time I decided to put together a little vignette. I have some old shoes that were left behind in an old farmhouse. A friend of mine purchased the house a few years ago and restored it. There were old shoes, clothes, and quilts left abandoned in the house for years. Of course, when I saw all of these goodies, I knew they would make perfect prim displays and clothes for my bears. My little panda named "Autumn" fits perfectly in one of the shoes. I made a prim pumpkin for him out of canvas fabric and included an antique photo. This little set would be darling sitting on your prim pine table or cupboard or up on a chippy white shelf.

This set is listed in a 3 day auction, which will end on Tuesday, Nov 15th. There is also a Buy it Now option. I will put this set in the mail right away, so that it arrives in plenty of time to be enjoyed for Thanksgiving.

~~ Our Disney & Sea World Vacation ~~

Whewwwww....we just returned home from our week vacation at Disney and Sea World in Orlando, Fla. Boy am I tired! :) We'd never been to any of the parks, so we decided to go before our kids got to big. It was exhausting, but tons of fun. I took hundreds of photos, of course. We visited the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Sea World. We also took the monorail around to some of the hotels and to downtown Disney. We also visited Disney's Boardwalk. Our favorite parks were Animal Kingdom and Sea World. The Magic Kingdom was fun, but it was super crowed and HOT! I can not imagine people going there in the middle of the summer. In the Animal Kingdom it wasn't nearly as crowed and there was lots of shade. The landscaping was much more lush and nice. The kids got to see a lot more of the characters also, because it wasn't so crowed. My daughter rode the Mt Everest roller coaster 6xs!!! She rode it 3xs with me and 3xs with her dad. :) The parade was also really great. There are lots of characters and performers in really elaborate, mechanical costumes. Very artistic! It was super fun! Sea World had lots of great rides and the shows are fabulous. They also have a deal where you can come back a second day for free. You can't beat that. We got to feed and pet the dolphins, which was one of our favorite things. We love dolphins! Downtown Disney is fun for shopping, but it's also crowed. We really liked the Disney Boardwalk. It has some shopping, dining and really cool street performers. It's set up like a sea side boardwalk town, and again it wasn't nearly as crowded.

I thought I would share just a few of the highlights from our trip. Hope you enjoy! :)

~*~Animal Kingdom~*~

While we were walking along in the Magic Kingdom, this lady dressed as a tree comes by on stilts. She was so cool! Once she walked into the vegetation, she totally blended in and disappeared.

This tree is really neat. It's called the tree of life. It's a man made tree in the middle of Animal Kingdom. It has tons of "carvings" all over it of animals. There are several different places in the park you can see it, and you can see new animals at each spot. I believe it's 400 feet tall.

My article in the New issue of Prims Magazine!!!

I am sooooo excited about this new article in the Oct issue of Prims magazine. It's not just about me though, but a fabulous group of artists....the To Dwell in Primitive Thymes (TDIPT) artists, to be exact. I came up with the idea several months ago to put together a group collaboration for all of the TDIPT artists. I sent my idea to the editor of Prims and she loved it. So after several months of getting artists together and writing the article, it's finally out in print! We have a 10 page spread!!! Not all of our artists were able to participate, but most were, so you will get to see lots of fabulous work that represents the TDIPT group. But that's not all....we will have a 2nd article in the January 2012 issue as well. So not only will you get to see some of the highest quality work represented right now in primitive world, there will be even more in the next issue.

A big thanks to Prims for publishing the article. This is a top notch magazine, with a great staff, and top notch photography. Be sure to pick up your copy today! I bought mine at Books a Million. :)

Halloween Panda bear and Dog on eBay now

I have 2 new Halloween pieces listed on eBay right now.

My first piece is my Corgi Beagle mix. She is named "Sorceress Pumpkin". Who is Sorceress Pumpkin you might ask? Well, she reigns over all of the Halloween pumpkins in Halloween world. She decides if a pumpkin is too big or too small, whether or not it will be carved for the Witches Halloween ball, or given to the mice to eat. It's a tough job to pick just the right Jack O'lantern, but Sorceress Pumpkin has perfected her job quite well.

Next I have a Halloween Panda bear, named "Merlin the Marvelous". I just love Merlin the Marvelous! Merlin of course is a Wizard and comes from a family full of Wizards and Witches. Each Wizard and Witch has a special job they train for, and Merlin's job is to make sure the moon and stars are shinning bright on Halloween night. He spends all year long polishing the stars to shine like jewels and the moon to sparkle like a diamond.

I have 2 new patterns to share....first is my new little Elly pattern. I haven't made an Elly in a REALLY long time and this is a new size. This little girl, named "Ophilia Elly", is 9.5" tall. She fits right in the palm of my hand. I love the pale pink and taupe, Shabby Cottage Chic, colors. Wouldn't she be great on an old chippy shelf?

Girl Scout "Cabin" trip to Roane Mnt, TN

We took some of our Girl Scouts on a "cabin" trip a couple of weekends ago to Roane Mnt state park. It's located just north of Johnson City, and approx 2.5 hours from where we live. This was one of the things the girls wanted to do with the cookie money they earned, and this was also our first over night trip. We had a great time, and the weather was fabulous. The park had several programs going that weekend, so we go to learn about Hawks, Owls, and Buzzards. We got to hold 2 varieties of snakes, which several of the girls just loved, surprise...surprise. They learned about butterflies native to the area, and did some nature study drawings. That evening was campfire basic training, and of course roasting marsh mellows, and making smores. We ended our trip the next morning with a hike up to the balds, which was really a beautiful way to end a trip.

I also have to say "Hats Off" to the staff and seasonal rangers working at Roane Mnt. It was wonderful to be able to bring in a group of girls, and have so many different programs for them to attend. They offer programs every day during the summer months. It made things much more enjoyable for the girls, and for the adults.

The photo of the house down in the valley, is Miller Homestead. It was one of the first homes built in the area and is used by the park to give demonstrations. I have several new things listed tonight...first on the TDIPT mercantile I have my "Old Toy Store Display". This piece was nominated in 2009 for a TOBY(Teddy Bear of the Year) award by Teddy Bear and Friends magazine. I have kept this piece in my studio for several years now, and have finally decided to part with it. Next, I have a very unique piece. I call it my "French Fashion Teddy Bear art". It's fun and whimsical. It would look cool on a shelf, it's a fun piece of art for the living room, or maybe the bedroom. Lastly, on Ebay, I have a Patriotic Americana bear named, Annie. Today I took a stroll around the yard to capture some summertime images using the sepia setting on my camera. I love the way it flattens the photograph, and you can really see the tones, shadows and textures of things.

~~ Art is good for the Soul ~~

If you've ever visited the National Gallery in Washington, DC, you know just how vast their art collection really is. That doesn't include, of course, all of the pieces that are hidden away and are rarely seen on exhibit. I was able to spend an entire day there a while back. I could have stayed much, much longer, but with limited time to visit other landmarks, I just spent the day. I took hundreds of photos, and stared at pieces I'd only seen in books, or talked about in Art History class in college. For the first time, I could stand in front of these pieces, and really look at them in greater detail. I could see each brush stroke, and how each one formed an object, a person. Or how vivid, or not, the color was in each piece. You really want the paint to still be wet, and be able to smell the linseed oil. It takes a lot of will power, I believe, just to stand and stare, when all you long to do is reach out and feel the texture of the paint.

The beauty of each piece was not just in the paint, but also in the frames. Even though they may seem gaudy by today's standards, they have a massive, ornate quality that cannot be overlooked. I even preferred the frames sometimes, over the painting, or maybe the painting was just not meant to compete with such a frame.

The photos below is just a very small sample of what I saw. I hope to share more soon. If you've never been, you really should add the National Gallery to your list of "things to do". Enjoy!

~~ Teddies Worldwide Show Preview has begun! ~~

Things have been a little unsettled here in the studio for the past week and a half. First off, Mother Nature was not kind to my neighborhood last week. We had a horrible storm, with straight line winds, that toppled huge old oak trees in every direction. They fell on houses, cars, and of course, power lines. We were with out power for about 7 days. Fortunately, no one was injured, but there was a lot of destruction. We had to move in with my husbands parents during that time. Needless to say, not much has been accomplished here for a while. We were finally able to return home this past Tuesday, only to find that our air conditioner was not working. If any of you live in the south, or have visited, you know just how hot & humid it gets here during the summer. We LOVE our air conditioning. These little set backs in life have unfortunately put me behind in the creative department.

I am now back in business, and working really hard to finish my new bears for the Teddies Worldwide show, which starts July 15th. I will have 5 new bears for the show, each with a Fun and Whimsical theme. I also have 3 new dogs I am working on. They will either be listed on Ebay or for the Teddies Worldwide show.

I have a new pattern and boy is he cute! This guy was inpired, like my Corgi/Beagle pattern, by my dog. His name is "Ringo" and he is a 12 year old Dalmatian mix, not sure if he's Lab or maybe Pit, but he has a very sweet, and very lazy personality.

~~ Amazing Sea Creatures ~~

Here are some more pictures from our beach trip....these are so cool! We ended up at the pier during low tide one evening. There were hundreds of sea creatures running around. It was so fun to watch them. I think we spent an hour in one little spot, just checking out the different shells crabbies and mussels were hauling around for houses.

I've never seen mussels actually come out of their shells and move around. They are really strange and very sci-fi looking.

Vacation is over, and it was wonderful. The blue skies, the white sand and the gorgeous sunsets. We had a great time last week on our trip to Florida. We discovered a place last year that we just loved. It's not commercial, no high rise buildings, no chain stores on every corner. It's a little island and if you go right after school lets out, it's not crowded. The kids love it!!!

I always take a million photos, because that's one thing I love to do. Instead of posting everything at once, I decided to do several posts. That way you can enjoy all of them, with out being over loaded.

This post has a lot of kid pics in it....but just wait until I get to the sunset photos!

The last day of school for my daughter is tomorrow. Yay! Then on Friday we are leaving for the beach! There is so much to do to get ready for a road trip. I won't be working in the studio for a while, but just as soon as I get back, it's right back to work. I want to make some more of my little Corgi dogs. ;) I've also had a request for a short haired dachshund. That should be fun. Hope I can make it work, we'll see.

I do have a new bear I will be listing for the TDIPT mercantile on the 31st. I already have him finished and ready to go. Even though I'll be on vacation, I'll still be checking my email.

a NEW pattern AND my PRIMS magazine Giraffe on Ebay

OMG! I love this new Dog Pattern. Last week I started to get a little bored and antsy. I needed something new to get my creative self going. Everyone in my house, except the youngest, has been sick. So on top of not feeling all that great, I was getting bored too. I spent quite a while looking through tons of animal photos trying to find inspiration for a new pattern. While there were a few animals that did capture my attention, they just didn't inspire me at that exact moment. I decided to take a break, and check on the kids who were outside playing with the doggies. Then "DUH" it hit me, our dog "Pumpkin" has the cutest face! I came right back in, drew out my pattern, and the result was this cute little guy "Alfred"

Alfred is on ebay right now....BUT if you happen to go see him in the next little while, his photos may not show up...apparently I've exceeded the bandwidth for my website/photo hosting. I am in the process of trying to take care of it now. Hopefully everything will be back up soon.

Girl Scouting is FUN!!!

I know I've mentioned before that I am a Girl Scout troop leader. I'm a leader with 2 other moms, and we have 13 girls in our Brownie troop. Our girls just finished up their 3 years of being Brownies. We had a "Bridging" ceremony last Sunday where they move up to being Juniors for the next 2 years. We rented this really cool "art building" downtown. We had a ceremony where they received all of the their badges & cookie prizes. We also had music, the girls sang and we had a dance instructor come. The girls had a great time! I thought I would share some pictures from the event. :)

I hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day yesterday. It was beautiful here. I got a lovely pressed daisy pendant necklace, a bouquet of roses, and some hand made soap, from my little girls & my hubby. I also got to pick out a ton of plants for my yard. We spent 6 hours yesterday working out in the yard. Boy, have I been neglecting things the past few years. It felt good to get outside, and spruce things up.

This has been my lucky week....

My first gift was totally unexpected and quiet wonderful...a friend of mine was really sick a few weeks ago, so I kept her daughter for a few days. No big deal right? I've already got two of my own, what's one more. My girls thought it was exciting to have a friend over for several days. I would do it for any of my friends that needed help. After she was feeling better, we went to visit them at their new house, which is fabulous by the way, but that's another blog post. Anyway, she surprised me with the cute antique bear pictured below. I have to say I was speechless! It's one of the nicest gifts I've ever received. I'd say he's from the 1920's or 30"s, and made from what appears to be rabbit fur. I did have to say, poor rabbit being made into a bear, but he's still very charming. :) I'm wondering, since he is made from real fur, if he was some sort of novelty item sold out west? I've named him Sir Sunnyside, after my friends Civil war era home. What a great friend!

My next gift, I've already told you about, is from MO at Wings and Paws Whimsies. It was her blog give away a while back. It came in the mail yesterday. I love how delicate, and charming it is. I reminds me of the vintage look thru eggs made from sugar, with their intricate scenes. I just love it! It is on my mantle with all of my other Easter lovelies. :)

I am so excited to announce I have an article in the Spring 2011 issue of PRIMS magazine! The name of the article is "Behind the Attic Door". I am so excited about this feature. PRIMS is such a fabulous magazine, and is really more of a collector's reference book. The photography is also top notch. If you love antique, primitive style folk art, this is the magazine for you. :)

I'd also like to say a big thanks to, Connie Hindmarsh of Hindmarsh Studios, for scanning the magazine cover for me, since I haven't received my copy yet.

Girl Scout Cookies, You've gotta VOTE....

Some of you may already know that I'm a Girl Scout leader. :) My daughter is in her last year as a Brownie. We just ended our Cookie selling season, boy am I tired. Our troop sold around 4,200 boxes of cookies!!! They earned around 2,200 dollars to use for camping and other trips, plus they will donate money to a charity of their choosing. Every year they have a contest for the best booth set up. The girls design a booth based on a theme, and then use their display when they set up at stores to sell cookies. This year they chose the Cookies, Cookies, Cookies theme. We made a frame to fit around our table, and bought a really neat Girl Scout fabric to cover the table with. They made banners to hang from the frame. They also made sandwich boards to wear, that they designed and painted themselves.

I know some of you are still having really cold temps and snow. I thought I would share some Spring photos. I took these in my yard, and around the neighborhood where I live. Everything is in bloom! We were having really nice temps near 80 degrees last week, and the first part of this week. Now we've had a cold front move in :( temps for the next 2 weeks are only in the 50s to low 60s.

I have a new bear pattern I just finished up today and listed on Ebay. He's a wee little guy, only measuring 9"tall, which is really small for me. I love the way he turned out. He fits right in the palm of my hand. I dyed the mohair a nice old mahogany color, and add a cute springtime collar and hat. Now he's just waiting, hoping someone will pick him to go live in a new house, with lots of other bears and animals.

I also have my Spotted Hare for sale on Ebay. Poor little bun didn't find a home at the Blooming Bears Show, but he hasn't lost hope. Spring is here and he knows he'll find a new place to live.

Since we are celebrating our 4th Birthday on the To Dwell in Primitive Thymes mercantile with lots of give-aways AND the online preview for the Blooming Bears Show started last night, I decided to have another give-away. It's not a handmade item, but still very cool. I collect vintage baby and doll clothes. I've been going through them, because I have a TON, and weeding some out. We are celebrating our 4th Birthday on the Mercantile this month!!! WHAHOOOO!
I have a new bunny, BlueBerry, for sale just for the celebration. He is made from a European mohair, that I custom dyed a nice old Springtime blue. He measures 11" tall not including his ears, which are another 8" long. He is stuffed with excelsior and gravel. He has old shoe buttons for eyes. I have have distressed him for an antique feel.

This is my first blog give-away and I'm really excited. This give-away is PERFECT for anyone who works with fabrics. I must admit I have a fetish for fabrics, so I have a LOT. I originally started my "Brady Bears @ Home" blog to post things about my family, hobbies, travel ect....but I always seemed to end up posting Everything here, on my "Brady Bears Studio" blog(are you confused yet?). Sooooo, I decided I needed to use my other blog as a place just to post new pieces for sale, nothing else. Valentine's Day Winter Bear for Sale on Ebay

I just finished this darling new bear. I've named him "Be Mine Bear" He is my first Valentine bear for this year. I love the combination of Winter & Valentine's Day. "Be Mine Bear" is also one of my large size bears. He measures 17" tall. "Be Mine Bear" is German mohair, with vintage shoe button eyes. He is stuffed with excelsior for a nice old feel, and gravel for nice weight. He wears a vintage style Valentine on his scarf that his little sister gave him, isn't that sweet? His hat and scarf were made from cotton fabrics.

This cutie is for sale now on Ebay. It's a 5 day auction which ends Saturday morning around 11am EST.

New Panda Bear

I recently finished an order for a panda bear. I thought I would share some pictures of him. He turned out really cute. It's been a long time since I've made one of these guys and this is my first one in a 19-20" size. My others have only been 15". He'll be off to his new home in a few days, I'll hate to see him go. :0)

Bears, Bunnies, and Snowmen...Oh My!

One of my new customers, Marsha, was kind enough to send me several photos of the teddies, bunnies and snowmen that she has collected. Well, of course I LOVE to see other people's collections and how they decorate. She has the cutest displays! I love them. Her house looks so warm and inviting. I could really sit back, relax with a cup of coffee, and just look at all the lovely eye candy! She has several pieces from one of my all time favorite artists, Lori Ann Corelis from "The Spotted Hare". I absolutely love Lori Ann's work. Now, one of my bears, "Mr. Snow" will be part of this lovely home. He's one lucky bear. ;0)

Marsha also read my recent post showing the new snowmen that I made, and the ones I collect, so she sent some pictures of snowmen in her own collection.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!!!

Snowmen! I've making these cute little snowmen shelf sitters lately and I've added a NEW Snowman pattern that's all mohair. I love these guys! They are so fun and have such cute faces. All of these have been adopted, but I plan on making more very soon. I think I will make a Valentine's Day snowman next. How cute would that be?

I will also take orders for custom one of a kind pieces.

Since I'm in the snowman mode, I thought I would show some pictures of my Winter scenes. I also collect bottle brush trees and putz houses, so I keep out all of the winter looking ones to display with my snowmen. I will also mix in some Valentine's Day pieces coming up in the next few days.
